What is Panchang?

Panchang (पंचांग, literally "five limbs") is the Hindu almanac for a single day. It records where the Sun and the Moon actually stand, and from those positions derives the five elements that decide whether a moment is auspicious: tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana.

Because every value is measured from sunrise at a specific place, the panchang differs by city — the same tithi can end at a different clock time in Delhi and in Chennai. Each day here is computed with the Swiss Ephemeris using the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard Indian almanacs follow.

The five limbs of the Panchang

  • Tithi

The lunar day: the time the Moon takes to move 12° away from the Sun. Thirty tithis make one lunar month across two pakshas.

  • Nakshatra

The lunar mansion, one of 27 star groups the Moon passes through, used for muhurta and birth charts.

  • Yoga

A combination of the Sun's and Moon's longitudes, forming 27 yogas that indicate the day's general nature.

  • Karana

Half of a tithi. Eleven karanas repeat through the month and matter for choosing auspicious times.

  • Vara

The weekday, counted from sunrise to sunrise rather than midnight to midnight.

Common questions

What are the five limbs of the Panchang?
Tithi (the lunar day), vara (the weekday), nakshatra (the Moon's star mansion), yoga (a combination of solar and lunar longitudes) and karana (half a tithi). Together they describe the character of the day.
What is Rahu Kaal?
An inauspicious window of roughly 90 minutes each day, derived from the interval between sunrise and sunset. It is traditionally avoided for starting anything new, and its timing shifts with the weekday and the location.
Which location is this panchang calculated for?
New Delhi, India, using the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa. Sunrise-dependent values such as Rahu Kaal and Abhijit Muhurat move by a few minutes elsewhere in India.
