Ganesh Visarjan
For ten days the idol has been treated as a guest in the house, woken, fed and put to rest. On Anant Chaturdashi that visit ends. The family performs the final aarti, offers modak and asks forgiveness for anything lacking in the hospitality, and the idol is carried out to the sound of dhol and immersed in a river, tank or an artificial visarjan pond. The parting line is a request rather than a goodbye: come back early next year. Many households now choose clay idols and municipal immersion tanks so the ritual does not load the water bodies.
The anant sutra vrat
The older observance belongs to Vishnu in his Ananta form, the one without end. Devotees fast, perform the Ananta puja, and tie a silk or cotton thread knotted fourteen times, men on the right arm and women on the left. The fourteen knots are read as the fourteen lokas. In the Mahabharata, Krishna advises Yudhishthira to keep this vrat during the exile in order to recover what the Pandavas had lost, which is why the day is linked with regaining stability after hardship. The thread is worn until it comes away on its own.
Choosing the right time
The puja window runs from sunrise until Chaturdashi Tithi ends, which is why it looks unusually long. The visarjan itself is fixed to a choghadiya slot rather than the whole window, and there are four usable slots through the day. This is why processions from different localities set out hours apart and why a household can choose a morning or a night immersion without either being wrong. If your city is not listed above, check the choghadiya for your location in the Panchang above, or in the Kaalo app, before you fix the time with your group.
