What it means

The name is literally “the bond (bandhan) of protection (raksha).” The rakhi isn't jewellery. It's a promise made visible: the brother pledges to stand by his sister, and she blesses his health and long life in return. Over the years the day has stretched well past the brother-sister frame. People now tie rakhis to cousins, close friends, and soldiers, to anyone they count as family.

The stories behind it

Several old tales sit behind the thread. The best known has Draupadi tearing a strip from her saree to bind a cut on Krishna's finger, and Krishna vowing to repay that small kindness, a debt he settles much later. In another, Indrani ties a consecrated thread on Indra's wrist before battle. The details differ, but the thread carries the same meaning in each: affection that obliges you to show up.

How it's observed

On the day itself, families gather in the morning after bathing and, in many homes, a short puja. The sister performs aarti, applies the tilak, ties the rakhi on the right wrist and offers sweets; the brother gives a gift, and the two exchange blessings. Kheer, ghewar and homemade mithai are the usual spread across North India. Those living apart post their rakhis weeks in advance, or tie them over a video call.

Choosing the right time

Timing matters more here than at most festivals. By custom the rakhi is tied during the daytime aparahna window, and never during Bhadra, a period held to be inauspicious for the ritual.
